Objectives and Goals

Prerequisite Knowledge

The student should understand basic biology and its terminology. This should include the function and structure of the cell. An acquaintence with basic anatomy and physiology will be useful.
The student should have some very basic knowledge of chemistry. This should include at least an idea of the function of atoms and molecules.Additionally a basic understanding of the biochemically important atoms, Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Nitrogen.

Objectives

  1. Origins: Students will know the location of urushiol within a plant.
  2. Synthesis: Students will know the structure of the urushiol molecule.
  3. Synthesis: Students will know the categorization of the urushiol molecule.
  4. Natural Products: Introduce the student to the science and concepts of Natural Products
  5. Target Tissue: Identify activities and sub-groups of society that will be most likely to display allergic urushiols responses.
  6. Target Tissue: Describe the immune reaction that occurs when an allergic person's skin is penetrated by urushiols.
  7. Transmission: Identify mechanisms by which urushiols are transmitted to people.
  8. Transmission: Identify precautions the one may take to avoid contact.
  9. Transmission: Describe consequences of contact with urushiols.
