The study of the retrovirus life cycle is the study of the disease cycle. From bacteriophages to Ebola to HIV, these supermolecules wreak havoc. Though they include some of the elements of a life form, they aren't classified as living creatures. They cannot replicate without subverting the host DNA, for example.
